24th June
Celebrations at Fit4Life
There were great celebrations at the end of a very successful Spring/Summer season in Scanlon Park on Thursday night. Given the fitness levels achieved during the season there were no guilty consciences at the amount of cakes and pastries consumed. All participants received medals and prizes were presented for different levels of achievement. In the 2K section of the club there were eight awards for those who showed the greatest improvement during the previous six months. Top of the list was Rita Dooley. Timed at 15 minutes and 5 seconds in the January timing she clocked 9 minutes 56 seconds in the June timing, a marvelous achievement. The other awardees in this category were Marian Flannery, Sarah Gough, Gillian Kenny, Martina Doyle, Deirdre O’Brien, Sarah Bowe and Marie Slattery. The best improvement in the 4K section was made by Neill Watts who knocked 3 minutes 23 seconds off his January time. The other award winners in this category were Ethel Dalton, Teresa Harrison, David Kennedy, Mandy Butler, Joanne Lawlor and Darragh Sharpe. There were also awards for some fast runners. Laura Haverty with 7.52 was the fastest over the 2K while Caoilte Malone got the 4K award with 17.09. Other fast winners were Mairead Lacey, Martina Walsh and Noel Maher. There were special awards for Caoimhe Foley, Deirdre Scott, Phil Martin and Martina McGrath.
Registration for the Autumn/ Winter season will get under way on Tuesday 31st August and will be confined to current members provided they register not later than 14th Sept. Following that date any places which become vacant will be allocated from a waiting list on a first come first served basis.

17th June    Fit For Life – Set to Party
The final “Timing Session” of the Spring/Summer season of the Kilkenny Fit for Life Club took place on the Scanlon Park athletic track on Thursday last. Once again the vast majority of members have seen time improvements. This is particularly true of those taking the 2K option where 88% recorded better times. And there was none better in terms of speed than relative new-comer, Laura Haverty who set a new club record of 7 minutes 52 seconds for this distance. Sarah Gough and Mairead Lacey also had greatly improved times with both coming in under nine minutes. Caoilte Malone’s time of 17mins 9secs for the 4K course still stands despite a strong challenge from Noel Maher who was timed at 17mins 45 secs. Sheila O’Callaghan, Catriona Muldowney and Mia Phelan were some seconds above the 18 minute mark. With all the “Timing” done for this season the co-ordinating committee have plans for a track-side party at 7.30pm following the final training session on Thursday evening.

27th May  Malone Sets New Record
A new 4K record for the Kilkenny Fit4life Club was set by Caoilte Malone at the May Timing Session on 27th May. Caoilte, who has shown steady improvement since joining the club, completed the 4K course in 17 minutes and 9 seconds. Her times over the last five sessions are as follows:- Jan 18.41, Feb 18.04, Mar 17.54, Apr 17.44 and May 17.09. Others who finished under 19 minutes are as follows;- Jacinta Horan, Noel Maher, Mia Phelan, Darragh Sharpe and Martina Walsh. The fastest, in 9 minutes 27 seconds, over the 2K course was Niamh Caroll. Others under ten minutes were Sarah Gough, Mairead Lacey, Maria Mahony, Phil Martin, and Marie Slattery. The final “Timing” for this session takes place on Thursday 17th June at 6.30pm. Presentation night will be Thursday 24th June when those who have made the most progress, not those with the fastest times, will be presented with their prizes.

St Patricks Day 5km

It was a marvellous success with many people asking that this become an annual event. Perhaps it can be so!!
(Apologies to all finishers from 101st onwards as our timing failed at that point).
The St Patrick’s Day 5K DASH organised by Kilkenny City Harriers and Kilkenny Fit4Life Club proved to be an enjoyable and very successful event with just over 250 taking to the road and a further 100 plus juveniles on the track. Mayor Malcom Noonan started the run which commenced at The Watershed and followed a course along the Bennettsbridge Road, a circle of The Castle Park and back to The Watershed.
After the run prizes were presented to the winners by Irene Henebry of the Fit4Life club. In making the presentation she thanked all who had participated…the walkers, joggers and runners, the various sponsors, the Kilkenny Bridge Centre and the Watershed for parking facilities, the face painters, the media and the road marshals and officials from Kilkenny City Harriers and The Fit4life Club.
Prizes for the 5K were won by juniors Eoghan O'Connor, kilkenny City Harriers, Rose Kennedy, Gowran and John Nolan, Kilkenny City Harriers, who completed the run in 22mins 34 secs23mins 39 secs and 23mins 59 secs respectively.
First home for the Ladies was Martina O’Dwyer, Carrick Road Runners in 20.32. She was followed in by Frances Mullally, St Joseph’s, (22.07) and Caoilte Malone, Kilkenny Fit4life Club in 22.44. Paul Cody, Kilkenny City Harriers, was the overall winner in 18.12. Second and third places went to Pat Kavanagh (18.31) and Jimmy Barcoe (18.46), both from the Gowran club.
